Ferdie vs Ranjit in 2010 vice guv race

vir2Last September 12, I had the chance to talk with Mapandan Mayor Ferdie Calimlim at Golden Flame Restaurant in Rosales while attending the birthday celebration of 6th District Rep. Conrad M. Estrella III.

In that brief encounter, I asked him about his reaction to Ranjit Shahani’s statement in a press conference that he is “ may gatas pa sa labi,” a Filipino idiomatic phrase referring to a person to be young and inexperienced. Mayor Calimlim smiled, shrugged his shoulders and jokingly touched his lips saying “wala namang gatas sa labi ko.” He laughed and smiled at me.

Calimlim is one of the vice gubernatorial contenders in Pangasinan come 2010 elections. He’s already making rounds of towns and barangays in the province. In these visits, he has articulated his plans and programs if ever he wins the vice gubernatorial derby.

Shahani, on the other hand, is trying to make a comeback as vice governor. In 1992 he ran with former Governor Aguedo F. Agbayani and both handily won the polls. Ranjit held the position until 1995 then became the representative in Congress for the 6th district.

During his stint as vice governor, Ranjit was known all over the province not because of his accomplishments as such but because of his acerbic tongue, late attendance to social functions and the occasional tongue lashing at then Governor Aguedo.

Mayor Calimlim is the current chief executive of a small town Mapandan and already on his last term. With his nine years stay in that office, he transformed the town into one of the most progressive towns in the province. He spearheaded social and infrastructure projects, notable of which is the holding of Mapandan Festival during the town’s fiesta which showcases products of the town, improved school buildings, renovated the town’s water supply and the construction of a new municipal hall.

If in case the two will have one-on-one fight over the vice governor position, the fight will likely a spectacle to watch akin to a Manny Pacquiao-Dela Hoya boxing bout.

And going back to the “may gatas pa sa labi” statement of Shahani, Calimlim has this to say: “Mas maganda na yong may gatas pa ako sa labi na marunong namang bumasa sa oras.”

What’s this I heard that Ranjit is itching to be in tandem with 2nd district Rep. Victor Agbayani in 2010? Agbayani declared lately his intention to regain the gubernatorial post over Governor Amado T. Espino, Jr. Does an Agbayani-Shahani team will do magic for Victor in regaining the post? Can Ranjit behave this time and prove himself to be a statesman? Or, will it be a déjà vu of 1992 to 1995?

And who will be the running mate of Governor Espino? A mole at the Capitol told me that until now, the governor is still mum on his choice of a vice governor. Mayor Calimlim is expecting to be the running mate. I heard that Board Member Alfie Bince is also eyeing the vice governor seat and expecting Espino to anoint him too as his running mate. So, it will be a toss up between Calimlim and Bince, just in case.

But Calimlim is not that itchy to be in tandem with Espino as he told the mediamen in one of his earlier statements. He can run as an independent candidate and dwell much on his popularity and qualifications.

Well, politics is already heating up both at the national and local levels.Let’s just watch for further developments.(For comments and suggestions, please email me at emperorvirgil@yahoo.com)
