PhotobucketLINGAYEN — One hundred ninety nine down, about 10,000 more to go.

Provincial Police Director Percival Barba said of the 10,430 loose firearms in Pangasinan, 195 have been confiscated from January 1 to September 14.

Barba said the loose firearms are those whose licenses have not been renewed yet and owners are given up to October 31 this year to renew their licenses.

After the deadline, Barba said the police will conduct a massive crackdown on loose firearms.

“We will apply for search warrants for all gun owners with expired licenses,” Barba said.

The provincial director said gun owners are given from October 1-31 to renew licenses, but they already can process the papers before those dates.

The provincial police wrote all gun owners in Pangasinan to remind them of the renewal of licenses, but “the turn out was very low,” he said.

He cited no numbers but said in the past, when the police issue amnesty and call for renewal, only five percent heed the call.

“We are hoping that this time, they will heed our call, before we conduct massive crackdown,” Barba said.

He added that according to records of the national police, 95 percent of gun-related crimes were perpetrated using loose firearms. (Yolanda Z. Sotelo)
