NFA rice diversion

vir2One of the programs of the government that deserve a commendation is its hunger mitigation through the anti-poverty program.

Cost of a kilo of rice for indigents dropped to P18.25, an amount pegged by the National Food Authority (NFA) for registered Tindahan Natin Outlets(TNO) all over the country. What many people are not aware of is that the rice being sold is part of the importation from Thailand which more or less cost P35 per kilo. This means that by selling it at P18.25, the government is subsidizing P16.75 per kilo.

Millions of pesos are spent for the social costs of this project. The reason behind this is to mitigate hunger which people have been clamoring due to the economic crisis. The crux of the program, however, is whether the TNOs all over the country are following the mandate given to them by the NFA such that the program could trickle down to the intended beneficiaries.

San Manuel mayor says he will run for Congress

By Virgilio Sar. Maganes

SAN MANUEL — “I will never run away from the race. If I will withdraw my plan to run from the congressional race, then I will be losing my face to my constituents.”

This was the reaction of Mayor Salvador M. Perez on the rumors that he has already abandoned his plan to run as a congressman in the 6th district in 2010 polls.

“Remember that I was the first one to announce my intention to replace Rep. Conrad Estrella. Long before (Secretary Hermogenes) Esperon and (Vice Governor Marlyn) Agabas did, I was already making round of visits in the barangays to feel the pulse of the people,” Perez told the Northern Watch.
