DAGUPAN CITY- “In three or more years from now, the city’s garbage problem will become worse. At present, 80 tons of garbage and wastes are gathered from only five villages –Poblacion, San Vicente, Anonas, Dilan-Paurido and Bayaoas. We have to act now.”

Thus said Urdaneta City Mayor Amadeo R. Perez, Jr. before a group of newsmen during the Pangasinan Press Club’s Engkwentro sa Lenox here on August 19.

He said that the city shall be securing P220 million loan from the Land Bank of the Philippines (LBP) to finance the proposed sanitary landfill. The project is in compliance with Republic Act No. 9003 or the Ecological and Solid Waste Management Act of 2000.

Mayor Perez said that P10-15 million of the loan will be used to purchase ten hectares of land and improve access roads in Catablan village ( the present dumpsite area) and the P180-200 million for the detailed engineering work and the sanitary landfill area.

Under RA 9003, all local government units in the country has until December 31, 2009 to comply with the said law otherwise they will be sanctioned by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR).

Perez also debunked the claims that the residents in the area are set to opposed the planned project citing health hazards as the reason.

“The present dumpsite of the city is already eight years in existence and sparsely populated with only 10-15 houses. In fact the waste segregation scheme is giving the people in the area sources of livelihood,” he said.

He however said there was a need to stop dumping near the creek to avoid seepage that will be hazardous to health. The dumpsite shall also be improved until such time that the new sanitary landfill is ready.

Meanwhile, on his political plans, Perez averred that he will no longer run for any political position and jokingly said that he will be the president of “istambay” after his term as city mayor.

Regarding the mayoral succession of his son, City Councilor Amadeo “Bobom” Prez IV, he said that it is not his own initiative so but that there is a strong clamor from all sectors in the city for him to run.

“Bobom has all it takes to be the new leader of the city. He has been honed for leadership having been a barangay captain for many years and now the senior city councilor. Beside of those qualifications, he is also a graduate of agriculture from the Araneta University Foundation,” Mayor Perez stressed.

And why not a vice mayor for his son?

“There should only be one Amadeo Perez in politics in 2010,” he said grinning.
