The show must go on

susan2Depression kills. It is a serious illness that should not be ignored. For no apparent reason, she chose to end her life.

We were shocked when we heard the news that she commited suicide.

We can’t believe it. She had almost everything. She belonged to a well-off family, she had good and disciplined children, she had the money, owned a big house and cars and most importantly, she had many friends, some of whom are true friends. She was an active Kiwanian officer who enjoyed every projects and activities of the club. She attended all conventions abroad, an opportunity that not all Kiwanians can avail of. Ano pa ang hahanapin niya?

But all these seemed not to be enough. May problema daw siya. For us it was a no big deal problem.

But still these were not enough to save her life. We just learned later that she was suffering from depression.

To our friend Gloria B. Ferrer, Farewell and may your soul rest in peace!

I always remember my editor’s piece of advice: You can write what you feel and always write from the heart.

On the radio you have to talk and portray what is expected from your program. You can not always reveal your true feelings. Even in times of trouble you have to pretend you’re okay. Para ka ring artista, you talk and act as if everything is okay for the benefit of your listeners. If you can not do it you have to beg off first and come back until you are ready.

One of the questions asked by Jeff of GMA’s Primera Balita in an interview regarding my daughter’s case is if and how the incident affects my job.

I must admit my job is a little bit affected. Many consider me as a very strong woman at hindi raw halata na ako ay nagluluksa. I am wondering too and I really don’t know where am I drawing my strength cause I can talk and now work as if I’m really doing fine. But the truth is I’m certainly not. The pain in me is something more than what anybody can ever imagine.

The format of my program deals mostly with the issues and concerns of children, women and family. There were times that some issues similar to what happened to my daughter Zharlene will come up and whether you like it or not nagpa-flashback muli and nangyari.

Even in simple discussions like how to raise a child, giving them the right nutrients, family planning, etc etc, naalala ko siya at naiiyak ako. I think it will take a long time before everything comes back to normal.

But for now since I’m back to work, kailangang panindigan, the show must go on!
