CALASIAO — The mayor of this town says he is too willing to accommodate mall giants, like SM to invest in his town but found a problem.

According to Mayor Roy Macanlalay mammoth malls like SM will augur well here because of the multiplier-effect it brings to the economy of the community.

“The problem, however, is big investor finds difficulty to consolidate five to 10 people to provide 10 to 15 hectares of land to accommodate the mall,” Macanlalay said.

He said despite this dilemma, mall giant Robinson’s has already purchased a 10-hectare lot at the back of Dagupan Honda Cars in Barangay San Miguel of this progressive town.

This town’s mall friendly open-door policy was lauded by people who lived outside of this town, who believed that the presence of malls like Robinson’s and SM will improve services and lower the prices of goods and services from other malls based in Dagupan City .

“The saving grace of better services and cheaper prices of goods are in the hands of Mayor Macanlalay, who has the key for the entry of SM, because it is next to impossible for SM to enter Dagupan City since it would ram against the interest of politicians there who have mall business to maintain,” a media guy who asked anonymity commented.

Meanwhile, Macanlalay junked as “wild” speculation from critics that tried to link him to the broad daylight and grisly murder of Engineer Doming Ballesteros.

“Napakalayo! (It’s far-fetched!). Politics in Calasiao is not shrouded by killings.”

He said although Ballesteros is the chairman of the town’s bids and awards committee, he has no personality on the construction of the P60-million municipal building that had undergone publications in a newspaper of general circulation and Philgephs (Philippine Government Electronic Procurement System).

He added that out of the four bidders only one participated.

“The bidding process was peaceful and orderly, and the theory that I have a hand on killing is farfetched!” he said.
