Classes on in typhoon-hit areas

By Yolanda Sotelo
Philippine Daily Inquirer

LINGAYEN, Pangasinan – When public schools open June 1, many students in western Pangasinan will hold classes in chapels, community stages, plazas, and other public spaces.

At least 152 school buildings were either damaged or destroyed when Typhoon “Emong” struck the province on May 7, said Dr. Aurora Domingo, education superintendent.

Classes will open as scheduled on June 1 because several options are available to remedy the shortage of classrooms, she said.

Aside from using public buildings, some schools may resort to “double shifts.” They will hold classes in the morning for some grade levels and in the afternoon for other students, Domingo said.

“We are also looking at some schools where some sections can be [merged],” she said.

Atty.
