EAVESDROPPER: What’s the fuss over Martin’s version of the national anthem?

eavesdropperThere’s no doubt that Mr. Martin Nievera is a good singer. Being a concert king and a prized singer in the country and even in Las Vegas, USA, Martin was chosen by no less that Manny Pacquiao to sing the national anthem “Lupang Hinirang” ( not Bayang Magiliw, idiots) during his just concluded fight with Briton Ricky Hatton.

It was an honor for him to do that. However, after his singing, he drew massive criticism from among the Filipino nationalists and the National Historical Institute (NHI), in particular.

And why the big furor and fuss about it? Nationalists claim that he did not sing it the way it should be sung- that of the musical arrangement of its composer Julian Felipe.

Mother’s Day first celebrated in Dagupan in 1917

DAGUPAN CITY – Ninety one years ago, the very first celebration of Mothers’ Day in Pangasinan, and perhaps the entire country, was held in this city through the initiative of Maria Magsanoc, a teacher and women’s rights advocate

The threw flowers which she called “gems of nature” at mothers after a moving speech extolling the virtues of mothers during a program held at the city school on November 17, 1917.

This is one of the historical firsts in Pangasinan which are unknown to most Pangasinenses being collected by the Pangasinan Heritage Society Inc.

SY Files: Si Inay

SY filesMommy, mama, inay, nanay. inda, ima, inang, ina, momsy. Iba-iba ang tawag natin sa ating nanay, pero ano man ang itawag natin sa kanila, pare-pareho ang kanilang puso – pusong ina.

May 10 is Mother’s Day and I think it’s just appropriate time to salute all the wonderful and great mothers, whatever the intensity of their love for their children, and whatever is the level of sacrifices or hardships they make in raising their kids.
