Weak Holy Week

PhotobucketAnother Lenten season is upon us, the blessed days of Holy Week are upon us.

Many use the Holy Week as the time for taking a vacation to the beach or go abroad.
In the past, people celebrated Holy Week inside the church and there they stayed until Easter.

Tourist ‘devotees’ are flocking to religious places in Pangasinan.

As we have observed in the past these people are in the first place tourists.

The Christian churches must admit that the number of those frequenting the churches during Holy Week has fallen off in terms of purpose.

That because of the deepening economic global and local crises, there has been a recognizable increase the number of ‘devotees’.

They came to Pangasinan not to pray and meditate but to enjoy themselves.

For them, their visit to Pangasinan’s tourist spots is to enjoy the vacation with nothing spiritual in their mindset.

As we meditate and pray, and also offer penance for the wrongs we have done to our fellowmen, and especially for our failure to change our ways despite knowing what is right and what is wrong.

Let us not make this Holy Week end with ceremonies to mark the resurrection of Jesus Christ from death.

Commercialism has enslaved the Christian Holy Week. Commercialism has diverted the people from the truth of why they are to celebrate the Holy Week.

The Holy week is supposed to be reconcile the people with God for the many betrayals that the people have committed.

Let us make the resolve to appreciate what we have been blessed with, and henceforth live our lives in such a way that could earn the forgiveness, protection and care that we deserve form the Almighty Creator.
