LINGAYEN — Music enthusiasts can expect the biggest and grandest rock band competition as the provincial government, led by Konsyerto sa Gulpo 2009 chairman, Ret. Col Paterno M. Orduña, started its series of elimination rounds in the six districts of Pangasinan.

With the theme, “Aliguas mo Pangasinan, Kaimbwasan min Kalangweran,” several amateur youth bands performed their original composition of songs advocating environmental protection in Tagalog, Pangasinense or Ilocano dialects in the first, second and third districts last April 1 in Alaminos City, April 2 in Bugallon and April 4 in San Carlos City.

The other elimination rounds will be held on: April 15, 5:00 p.m., for 5th District and April 17, 5:00 p.m. in Rosales for 6th District.

Two bands will be chosen in every district making a total of 12 bands that will advance to the semi-final round on April 25, 5:00 p.m. at the Lingayen Beachfront.

From the 12 entries, five of them will compete in the Final Round, or Battle of the Champions, on April 29, 5:00 p.m. at the Lingayen Beachfront that will determine the second runner-up, first runner-up and grand champion.

The grand champion will serve as the Ambassador of Goodwill of the provincial government in promoting the various activities on environmental concerns.

The contestants will be judged on the following criteria: originality (original composition to environmental/developmental concerns), 50 percent; musicality, 20 percent; stage performance, 20 percent and audience impact, 10 percent.

Rock, reggae and alternative music are one of the most “in” thing today and its message has a powerful social impact among the youth, Orduña said, adding that the message in songs sometimes dictates their fashion, attitudes and language.

Konsyerto sa Gulpo 2009 aims to use this medium to develop environmental awareness among the them and harness their talents towards developmental endeavors. (PIO/Ninia F. Nicolas)
