Japan turns over P300-M fertilizer assistance

SUBIC -— A turn over ceremony between the Philippines and Japan for the 7th Non-Project Grant Assistance (NPGA) amounting to P300 million was held here Wednesday.

Japanese Embassy Minister and Head of Chancery Jiro Okuyama and Department of Agriculture Undersecretary for Finance Bernie G. Fondevilla led the turnover ceremony of ammonium sulfate fertilizers, which will be made available to farmers at prices lower than existing market levels.

The NPGA is an untied commodity grant that aims to promote economic and structural adjustment efforts, as well as mitigation of economic difficulties of the recipient country.

Okuyama said that Japan is extending the grant to assist the farmers in terms of lower fertilizer costs and increasing the country’s food productivity.

He said that the 8th NPGA amounting Y700 million for the Philippines has just been signed by Foreign Affairs Secretary Alberto Romulo and Japanese Ambassador Makoto Katsura at ceremonies held at the Department of Foreign Affairs.

Fondevilla expressed the Philippine government’s gratitude to the Japanese government for its continuing support to the agricultural development of the country.

Daniel Oñate, vice president for marketing of Agrotech Agricultural Products Inc., said that the ammoniun sulfate grant will boost agricultural productivity in the country.

Oftociano “Anong” Manalo, president of the Region 1 Confederation of Irrigators Associations, said that the farmers are very glad that Japan is giving due concern to the plight of the farmers.

Also present during the ceremony were ABONO Party-list chairman Rosendo O. So., Fertilizer Dealers and Farmers Federation vice president Danny Sim, Second Secretary of the Economic Section of the Embassy of Japan Shinpei Ishido, Kevin Fitzgerald of Crown Agents, Department of Agriculture Regional Executive Director RFU-III Redentor S. Gatus, Rommel S. Herrera of the International Finance Group of the Department of Finance and officials of different farmers organizations
