BUGALLON- Vice Governor Jose Ferdinad Z. Calimlim Jr. appreciated the people of Bugallon for giving due importance to the value of carabaos from which they can derive additional income.
He cited the efforts of Bugallon Mayor Ric Orduña in reminding the people of the value of carabaos in the field of agriculture by holding an annual Carabao Festival.
“I salute the people of Bugallon for giving importance to carabaos,” Calimlim said. “We have to do something now because we might wake up one day as an agricultural country without a carabao to speak of.”
He said that there are carabao varieties that are good for milk production while there are carabao varieties that are good for farm work.
“I believe that there are institutions and people who are working together for the common cause of helping the farmers improve their livelihood through enterprise based on carabao by products,” Calimlim said.”
Mayor Orduña said they are not only looking into having more carabaos but are also keen on processing carabao’s milk.
“Carabao’s milk can be processed into premium ice cream, specialized cheese varieties like kesong puti, yoghurt, pastillas de leche,” Orduña said. “Processed milk will increase the income of our farmers.”
Abono Party-list President Ponciano Onia Jr. said they co-sponsored this year’s Carabao Festival because it advocates the need to curb the decline in carabao population and for people to consider the carabao not just as a farm worker but also as source of additional income.
Onia said that Abono Party-list will make representations with the Philippine Carabao Center so that more carabaos will be allocated for the farmers of Bugallon.
He said that there are farming activities that farm machineries cannot perform and that the carabao is the only one that can perform such role.
